LEADING INSOLVENCY AND BUSINESS
Having practised as a partner/director at Hofmeyr, Herbstein and Gihwala Inc for more than 20 years, Alec Brooks in 2001 moved away from the big law firm environment and joined Mervyn Taback Inc, a commercial mining law firm, to create an insolvency law practice and expand the commercial litigation department. During this period he dealt with a number of large insolvencies including Macmed, Prima Bank, PSCGG (Gary Porritt) and the Brett Kebble estate. In December 2006 he left Tabacks and formed Brooks & Brand Inc specialising in insolvency law and commercial litigation. During this period he, inter alia, dealt with the infamous Barry Tannenbaum insolvent estate. Brand left the practice at the end of June 2015. Keith Braatvedt, formerly a director of Hogan Lovells, joined the practice on 1 July 2015 whereupon the practice became Brooks & Braatvedt Inc. Keith brought with him a wealth of commercial litigation, insolvency and business rescue experience.
